The Toyota Aqua (called the Prius C in some countries) is a small hybrid hatchback and one of the most fuel-efficient cars you can import from Japan. It uses Toyota's well-proven 1.5 hybrid system, is cheap to insure and easy to park, and parts are widely available in East Africa and the Caribbean.
Two Generations
| Generation | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (NHP10) | 2011–2021 | By far the most common. Updated in 2014 and again in 2017 with new bumpers and lights. |
| 2nd (MXPK) | 2021 onward | Roomier, more modern hybrid battery, better safety kit. Costs more. |
Grades
- L: basic, often for fleets. Fewer comforts.
- S: the standard private-buyer grade.
- G: better seats and trim, and often alloy wheels and extra features.
- Crossover (2017 on): raised suspension and SUV-style trim.
Hybrid Battery Care
The hybrid battery is what buyers worry about most, but on the Aqua it is usually long-lasting. Two things help:
- Cooling fan intake: the battery is cooled by a fan that draws air from the cabin, near the rear seat. If the intake is blocked by dust or pet hair, the battery runs hot and wears faster. Clean it regularly, especially in hot, dusty countries.
- Warning lights: ask for a dashboard photo with the car switched on. A healthy car shows "READY" with no warning lights.
What Else to Check
- Inverter coolant: the hybrid system has its own coolant. Check the level at your first service.
- 12-volt battery: a weak small battery can stop the car starting, even when the hybrid battery is fine.
- Low mileage for its age: common and genuine in Japan, but always confirm with the auction sheet.
- Always ask for the auction sheet and read it before paying: see how to read a Japanese auction sheet and how to check genuine mileage.
