The Toyota Raize is a small SUV launched in Japan in 2019. It is built by Daihatsu (part of Toyota) and sold by Daihatsu as the Rocky. It is shorter than a Toyota Yaris Cross but has good ground clearance, a big boot for its size and low running costs. Because it is so new, it fits strict age limits such as Jamaica's.
Engines
- 1.0 turbo petrol, three cylinders: the original engine. Lively in town, fine on the highway.
- 1.2 petrol and 1.2 hybrid (e-SMART HYBRID): added from late 2021. The hybrid drives on its electric motor, with the engine working as a generator.
4WD is available on the 1.0 turbo.
Grades
- X: basic.
- G: mid grade.
- Z: top grade with bigger wheels, LED lights and more equipment. The most popular.
All have Toyota/Daihatsu Smart Assist safety features (automatic braking and more).
What to Check
- CVT gearbox: ask whether the inspector noted judder or whining.
- Turbo: ask about smoke or noise noted by the inspector.
- Safety sensors: windscreen or front-end repairs can affect the camera.
- Mileage: many are low-mileage. See how to spot odometer rollback.
- Auction sheet: read how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Limits: Which Countries Can Take One
Some countries cap the age of an imported car: Jamaica allows up to 5 years, Trinidad & Tobago 4 years, and Kenya and Guyana 8 years. The Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, the Eastern Caribbean islands such as Saint Lucia and Antigua, Uganda and Tanzania have no strict age limit on our checker. Rules change, so always confirm with your clearing agent before you pay.
Most Raize cars are new enough for Kenya, Guyana and Jamaica, and the newest also for Trinidad.
