How to Read a Japanese Car Auction Sheet (Beginner's Guide)

If you're buying an imported car in Pakistan, the auction sheet is the single most valuable document you'll receive. It's a standardized report generated at the time the vehicle was sold at a Japanese auction house, and learning to read it can save you from expensive surprises.

The Overall Grade

Auction sheets assign an overall condition grade, typically ranging from 1 to 6, or sometimes expressed as R (repaired) for vehicles with prior accident work. Grade 4.5 and above generally indicates excellent condition, while grades below 3.5 suggest more significant wear or repair history.

Interior and Exterior Grades

Separate from the overall grade, most sheets include specific interior (A through E) and exterior condition ratings. A high overall grade paired with a poor interior grade might indicate a mechanically sound car with heavy cosmetic wear inside — useful information if interior condition matters to you.

The Damage Diagram

A simplified outline of the car's body is marked with coded symbols indicating scratches, dents, rust, or repainted panels. Common codes include A (small scratch), U (dent), and W (replaced panel). Learning even a handful of these symbols dramatically improves your ability to assess a vehicle remotely.

Equipment and Options Notes

The sheet also lists factory equipment such as navigation, sunroof, leather seats, and safety features, which can be cross-referenced against what a seller claims is included.

Mileage Verification

While mileage is recorded on the sheet, it's worth cross-checking this figure against the vehicle's condition and service history where available, as odometer tampering — while illegal — is not unheard of.

Why This Matters When Buying Locally

Even when purchasing a car that's already landed in Pakistan, a reputable dealer should be able to produce the original auction sheet for imported units. If a dealer can't or won't provide it, that's a meaningful red flag.
