The Mazda CX-5 is a mid-size SUV with a quality interior, sharp handling and, in Japan, a very popular 2.2-litre diesel. Diesel SUVs are rare on the Japanese used market, so the CX-5 XD is one of the few ways to get an economical, torquey diesel SUV from Japan at a normal price.
Two Generations
| Generation | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| KE (1st) | 2012–2016 | Good value now. Facelift in 2015 added LED lights and a better infotainment screen. |
| KF (2nd) | 2017 onward | Sharper styling, quieter cabin, better safety kit. Most of our stock is KF. |
Engines and Grades
- XD: the 2.2 SKYACTIV-D turbo-diesel. Strong pulling power and low fuel use on long runs. Many are AWD.
- 20S / 25S: 2.0 or 2.5 petrol. Simpler and cheaper to maintain; better if most of your driving is short town trips.
- PROACTIVE: mid grade with more safety equipment.
- L Package: top grade with leather seats, and often a sunroof and powered seats.
What to Check on a Diesel XD
- Your local diesel: the SKYACTIV-D has a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and is designed for low-sulphur diesel. Ask your mechanic about diesel quality where you live before choosing an XD.
- Driving pattern: lots of short trips stop the DPF from cleaning itself and can cause carbon build-up. If you mainly drive short distances in town, a petrol 25S is the safer choice.
- Oil level: the dipstick has an extra "X" mark. Oil above it can mean fuel is diluting the oil, and it needs an oil change.
- Service history: regular oil changes with the correct low-ash diesel oil matter more on this engine than on most.
What to Check on Any CX-5
- Infotainment: test the screen and control knob, and check the reversing camera works.
- Tyres and suspension: the CX-5 is often on 19-inch wheels, and those tyres cost more to replace.
- Always ask for the auction sheet and read it before paying: see how to read a Japanese auction sheet and how to check genuine mileage.
