The Volvo V40 (2012–2019) is a premium compact hatchback with a strong safety record: it was the first car with an airbag for pedestrians under the bonnet. Japanese-market V40s are right-hand drive, often dealer-serviced and low-mileage, and they are good value compared with the same car elsewhere.
Engines
- D4: 2.0 diesel. Strong pulling power and very economical on long drives.
- T3, T4, T5: turbo petrol, from economical to fast.
- Cross Country versions have a raised, rugged look.
Trims
- Momentum: well equipped.
- Inscription: luxury trim with leather.
- R-Design: sporty styling and seats.
Diesel or Petrol?
The D4 diesel needs low-sulphur diesel and regular longer drives. For mostly short trips or where fuel quality is poor, choose a petrol V40.
What to Check
- Diesel (D4): ask about warning lights or notes about the particulate filter.
- Safety systems: windscreen or front-end repairs can affect the City Safety camera and sensors.
- Service history: ask for Japanese dealer records.
- Parts and servicing: check a Volvo specialist and parts are available where you live.
- Radio and navigation: Japanese FM radio uses a different band (76–90 MHz) and the navigation is set up for Japan. Budget for a band expander or a new head unit.
- Auction sheet: read how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Limits: Which Countries Can Take One
Some countries cap the age of an imported car: Jamaica allows up to 5 years, Trinidad & Tobago 4 years, and Kenya and Guyana 8 years. The Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, the Eastern Caribbean islands such as Saint Lucia and Antigua, Uganda and Tanzania have no strict age limit on our checker. Rules change, so always confirm with your clearing agent before you pay.
A 2018 or 2019 V40 can go to Kenya and Guyana. Older ones suit the no-limit markets.
The table at the bottom of this page applies each country's rule to our live stock and shows the cheapest delivered price. For the full list see import age limits by country, and for duty and port fees see how to calculate the total cost.
