The Suzuki Swift is a light, fun and very economical small hatchback. It is cheap to buy, cheap to ship because of its size, and parts are easy to find in most markets where Suzukis are sold. The Swift you will most often find at export prices is the 4th generation (2017–2023).
Engines
- 1.2 petrol (DualJet): the most common. Economical and simple.
- 1.2 mild hybrid: adds a small motor-generator that helps the engine and saves fuel. No big battery to worry about.
- 1.0 turbo (RSt): stronger, sportier.
- Swift Sport: 1.4 turbo, a genuine hot hatch.
Grades
- XG: the basic grade.
- XL: more equipment.
- RS: sporty styling and firmer suspension, tuned in Europe.
- Hybrid ML / RS and special editions such as XR Limited also appear; the grade is part of the listing name.
What to Check
- CVT gearbox: ask whether the inspector noted judder or whining. Many Swifts have a CVT; some have a 5-speed manual.
- Safety sensors: many have camera-based automatic braking. A replaced windscreen can affect it.
- Swift Sport: check for modifications and hard use; the auction sheet notes them.
- Mileage: see how to spot odometer rollback.
- Auction sheet: read how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Limits: Which Countries Can Take One
Some countries cap the age of an imported car: Jamaica allows up to 5 years, Trinidad & Tobago 4 years, and Kenya and Guyana 8 years. The Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, the Eastern Caribbean islands such as Saint Lucia and Antigua, Uganda and Tanzania have no strict age limit on our checker. Rules change, so always confirm with your clearing agent before you pay.
A 2018-onwards Swift can go to Kenya and Guyana. The newest ones also qualify for Jamaica.
