The Toyota Vitz is Toyota's small hatchback, sold in most other countries as the Yaris. It is one of the cheapest, most economical cars you can import from Japan, and a favourite first car and ride-hailing car. The Vitz you will find at export prices is the third generation (2010–2020). In 2020 Toyota replaced it with the new Yaris; see our Yaris and Yaris Cross guide.
Engines
- 1.0 petrol: the cheapest to run, fine for city driving.
- 1.3 petrol: the most common. Better on highways and hills.
- 1.5 petrol: sportier RS and GR versions.
- 1.5 hybrid (from 2017): the same system as the Toyota Aqua, very low fuel use in town.
Grades
- F: the main grade. Most export Vitz are an F.
- F Safety Edition: an F with Toyota Safety Sense (automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning), from the 2017 update. Listings sometimes spell it "Safty Edition".
- U: more equipment.
- Jewela: a version with softer styling and colours.
What to Check
- Ex-rental cars: many Vitz were rental cars in Japan. That is not a problem in itself (they are serviced regularly) but check the auction sheet, which notes rental use, and look at interior wear.
- CVT gearbox: ask about judder or whining.
- Safety Sense camera: a replaced windscreen can affect it.
- Mileage: see how to spot odometer rollback.
- Auction sheet: read how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Limits: Which Countries Can Take One
Some countries cap the age of an imported car: Jamaica allows up to 5 years, Trinidad & Tobago 4 years, and Kenya and Guyana 8 years. The Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, the Eastern Caribbean islands such as Saint Lucia and Antigua, Uganda and Tanzania have no strict age limit on our checker. Rules change, so always confirm with your clearing agent before you pay.
A 2018 or 2019 Vitz can still go to Kenya and Guyana. For Jamaica and Trinidad you need a newer car, such as the Yaris that replaced it.
The table at the bottom of this page applies each country's rule to our live stock and shows the cheapest delivered price. For the full list see import age limits by country, and for duty and port fees see how to calculate the total cost.
