The Toyota C-HR is a compact crossover with coupe-like styling and the proven Toyota hybrid system. In Japan it was a best-seller from its launch in late 2016, so there are plenty of low-mileage, well-kept examples at auction. It is a popular choice for buyers who want a Toyota hybrid that looks more modern than an Aqua or Prius.
Hybrid or Turbo?
| Version | Engine | Drive | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid | 1.8 petrol + electric (same system as the Prius) | Front-wheel drive | Low fuel use, especially in traffic |
| Turbo | 1.2 turbo petrol | Often 4WD | Slightly more fun to drive; uses more fuel |
In Japan, a C-HR listed at 1.8 litres is the hybrid. Some auction listings forget to put "hybrid" in the name, so ask us to confirm from the chassis code before you buy.
Grades
- S: standard grade with Toyota Safety Sense (automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control).
- G: adds leather-combination seats and nicer trim. The most common grade.
- LED Edition / LED Package: adds LED headlights.
- Mode-Nero: special edition with black accents.
- A facelift in late 2019 brought updated lights and bumpers.
What to Check
- Hybrid system: ask for a photo of the dashboard with the car switched on and no warning lights. The hybrid battery is usually very durable on low-mileage C-HRs.
- Rear visibility: the styling means small rear windows. A working reversing camera matters, so check it in the photos or ask.
- Rear seat: tighter than in a Vezel. If you carry adults in the back often, compare the two first.
- Windscreen area: the Safety Sense camera sits behind the windscreen, so a crack there can be expensive to fix.
- Always ask for the auction sheet and read it before paying: see how to read a Japanese auction sheet and how to check genuine mileage.
