The Daihatsu Hijet is one of Japan's classic kei commercial vehicles: a tiny van or pickup with a 660cc engine that carries a surprising amount. Small businesses, farms and delivery services use it because it is cheap to buy, run and ship. It competes directly with the Suzuki Every and Carry (see Suzuki Every vs Carry).
Hijet Cargo or Hijet Truck?
- Hijet Cargo: a small van with sliding side doors and a flat cargo floor. Good for deliveries and tradespeople.
- Hijet Truck: a small pickup with a drop-side bed. Good for farms and building materials.
- The Toyota Pixis Van / Truck is the same vehicle with Toyota badges.
Specs and Grades
- 660cc three-cylinder engine, non-turbo or turbo (Cargo).
- 2WD or 4WD, manual or automatic. 4WD with low range suits farms and rough roads.
- Cargo grades include Deluxe, Special and Cruise (more comfort); truck grades include Standard and Jumbo (bigger cabin).
What to Check
- Load bed or cargo floor: look for damage and rust, a sign of heavy use.
- Clutch and gearbox: kei commercials work hard; check for slipping or noise.
- 4WD: check it engages and matches the export certificate.
- Rust: check the underbody and cab corners on vehicles from northern Japan.
- Registration: confirm how your country classes kei vans and trucks.
- Auction sheet: read how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Limits: Which Countries Can Take One
Some countries cap the age of an imported car: Jamaica allows up to 5 years, Trinidad & Tobago 4 years, and Kenya and Guyana 8 years. The Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, the Eastern Caribbean islands such as Saint Lucia and Antigua, Uganda and Tanzania have no strict age limit on our checker. Rules change, so always confirm with your clearing agent before you pay.
Older Hijets suit the no-limit markets; for Kenya and Guyana you need one no more than 8 years old.
