Japanese-market BMWs are right-hand drive, often dealer-serviced with low mileage, and they lose value quickly in Japan. That makes them some of the best-value European cars you can import. This guide covers the two BMWs most often found at export prices: the 1 Series hatchback and the 3 Series sedan.
Models and Engines
| Model | Years | Common engines |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Series (F20) | 2011–2019 | 118i: 1.5 three-cylinder turbo petrol (from 2015). 118d: 2.0 diesel |
| 1 Series (F40) | 2019 onwards | 118i, 118d; now front-wheel drive |
| 3 Series (F30) | 2012–2019 | 320i: 2.0 turbo petrol. 320d: 2.0 diesel |
The "d" models are diesels: strong pulling power and very economical on long drives. "Sport", "M Sport" and "Luxury" are trim lines.
Diesel or Petrol?
BMW's modern diesels need low-sulphur diesel and regular longer drives. If fuel quality where you live is poor, or the car will mostly do short trips, choose the petrol 118i or 320i.
What to Check
- Service history: many Japanese BMWs come with dealer records. Ask for them.
- Diesel timing chain: the older N47 2.0 diesel (up to about 2014–2015) is known for timing-chain wear. Ask the inspector about rattle on start-up.
- Run-flat tyres: most of these BMWs have run-flat tyres and no spare wheel. Run-flats cost more to replace; some owners switch to normal tyres and carry a kit.
- Warning lights and electronics: ask about any dashboard warnings on the auction sheet.
- Parts and servicing: check that a BMW specialist and parts are available where you live before you buy.
- Radio and navigation: Japanese FM radio uses a different band (76–90 MHz), and the built-in navigation is set up for Japan. Budget for a band expander or a new head unit, or ask us to arrange one before shipping.
- Auction sheet: read how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Limits: Which Countries Can Take One
Some countries cap the age of an imported car: Jamaica allows up to 5 years, Trinidad & Tobago 4 years, and Kenya and Guyana 8 years. The Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, the Eastern Caribbean islands such as Saint Lucia and Antigua, Uganda and Tanzania have no strict age limit on our checker. Rules change, so always confirm with your clearing agent before you pay.
A 2019 1 Series can still go to Kenya and Guyana. Older 1 and 3 Series cars suit the no-limit markets.
The table at the bottom of this page applies each country's rule to our live stock and shows the cheapest delivered price. For the full list see import age limits by country, and for duty and port fees see how to calculate the total cost.
