Japanese-market Audis are right-hand drive, usually dealer-serviced, and lose value quickly in Japan, so they can be very good value. The models most often found at export prices are the A1, A3 and A4.
Models
| Model | What it is | Common engines |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Small premium hatchback (Sportback = 5 doors) | 1.0 and 1.4 TFSI turbo petrol |
| A3 | Compact hatchback and sedan | 1.4 TFSI turbo petrol |
| A4 | Mid-size sedan and Avant wagon | 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol |
TFSI means turbocharged petrol with direct injection. S line is a sporty trim package (bumpers, wheels, seats), not a different engine. Real performance models are called S3, S4, RS3 and so on.
Gearbox
Most use S tronic, Audi's dual-clutch automatic. It shifts quickly but needs its fluid changed on schedule.
What to Check
- S tronic gearbox: ask about jerky low-speed shifts or warning lights.
- 2.0 TFSI oil use: some older 2.0 TFSI engines used a lot of oil. Ask the inspector.
- Timing chain: on older TFSI engines, ask about rattle on cold start.
- Service history: ask for Japanese dealer records.
- Parts and servicing: check a specialist and parts are available where you live.
- Radio and navigation: Japanese FM radio uses a different band (76–90 MHz) and the navigation is set up for Japan. Budget for a band expander or a new head unit.
- Auction sheet: read how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Limits: Which Countries Can Take One
Some countries cap the age of an imported car: Jamaica allows up to 5 years, Trinidad & Tobago 4 years, and Kenya and Guyana 8 years. The Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, the Eastern Caribbean islands such as Saint Lucia and Antigua, Uganda and Tanzania have no strict age limit on our checker. Rules change, so always confirm with your clearing agent before you pay.
Most Audis at export prices are older than 8 years and suit the no-limit markets; a 2018-onwards A1 can still go to Kenya and Guyana.
The table at the bottom of this page applies each country's rule to our live stock and shows the cheapest delivered price. For the full list see import age limits by country, and for duty and port fees see how to calculate the total cost.
