The Toyota Tank is a small, tall family car with sliding rear doors on both sides. It is shorter than a Corolla but has a lot of space inside, seats five, and is very easy to park. That makes it a good fit for city families, school runs and small-business errands.
Tank, Roomy, Thor and Justy: The Same Car
The Tank was built by Daihatsu (a Toyota company) and sold under several names:
| Name | Brand | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Tank | Toyota | Sold 2016–2020, then merged into the Roomy |
| Toyota Roomy | Toyota | The same car with a different front; still sold |
| Daihatsu Thor | Daihatsu | The original version |
| Subaru Justy | Subaru | Rare |
Mechanically they are the same, so parts are shared. If you are searching, search for all four names to see more choice.
Engine and Trims
All versions use a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine.
- X and G: the standard engine. Fine in the city, slower on highways and hills with a full car.
- G-T and Custom G-T: the turbo version. More power for hills and highways, a little more fuel.
- Custom G: the "Custom" models have a sportier front and more equipment.
If you drive mostly in town, the standard engine is enough. If you have hills, carry five people often, or drive on the highway, choose a G-T.
What to Check
- Sliding doors: most Tanks have at least one power sliding door. Both should open and close smoothly by button and by hand.
- CVT gearbox: ask whether the auction inspector noted any judder or noise.
- Turbo (G-T only): ask about smoke and warning lights.
- Mileage: ours have 130,000 to 226,000 km. Look at the auction grade and interior wear, not just the number.
- Interior: check the rear seats slide and fold properly and look for stains.
- Auction sheet: see how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Rules
Our Tanks are 2019 models, which is new enough for Kenya's 8-year rule in 2026. They are not new enough for Jamaica (5 years) or Trinidad & Tobago (4 years). Countries with no strict limit on our checker, like Uganda, Tanzania, the Bahamas, Barbados and Suriname, can take them too.
In Our Stock (September 2026)
We have 3 Toyota Tanks, all 2019, including a G-T turbo, a G Edition and a Custom G.
