The Suzuki Jimny is a small but serious off-roader: a ladder-frame chassis, solid axles and a proper low-range 4x4 system in a body shorter than most hatchbacks. It is one of the most wanted cars from Japan, and good ones sell fast.
Which Jimny Is Which?
| Model | Years | Engine | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| JB23 | 1998–2018 | 660cc turbo (kei) | Older, cheap, tough. Too old for strict age rules. |
| JB64 | 2018 onward | 660cc turbo (kei) | The current boxy design, narrow kei body. |
| JB74 Jimny Sierra | 2018 onward | 1.5 petrol | Wider body with wheel-arch flares and more power. Best for highways. |
The Sierra is the better choice if you drive on highways or carry passengers regularly. The 660cc JB64 is lighter, cheaper to tax in some countries and still very capable off-road.
Manual or Automatic?
Both come with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The manual gives more control off-road; the automatic is easier in traffic.
What to Check
- Off-road use: look underneath for scraped skid plates, bent steering parts and rust on the frame.
- Modifications: lift kits and big tyres are common in Japan. They can be great, but check they are legal in your country.
- 4WD engagement: ask whether 4H and 4L were tested.
- Turbo (660cc models): ask about smoke or noise.
- Auction sheet: see how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
Age Rules
The JB64 and JB74 (2018 onward) meet Kenya's 8-year rule, and 2021-onward cars meet Jamaica's 5-year rule. See your country under import markets.
Availability
We don't have a Jimny in stock right now (September 2026). Demand is high in Japan too, so Jimnys, and especially the Sierra, hold their value well.
We can source one for you: message us on WhatsApp with the model (JB64 or Sierra), year range, gearbox and budget, and we'll look at the Japanese auctions and send you options with the auction sheet and delivered price.
For other small 4x4s and kei vehicles, see our Suzuki page and the kei truck guide.
