"Foreign used" cars in Trinidad and Tobago almost all come from Japan. Importing one yourself is possible, but T&T has one of the strictest age rules in the Caribbean, so the car has to be recent.
The 4-year rule
Private importers can bring in cars up to 4 years old. In 2026 that means cars built in 2022 or later, counted from manufacture. Dealers face extra restrictions; this guide covers private imports. Our Trinidad list below only shows cars that qualify.
Motor Vehicle Tax and duty
T&T charges Motor Vehicle Tax by engine size and age, plus customs duty and VAT on the CIF value. Smaller engines (under 1,600cc) pay much less, which is why hybrids like the Aqua and Note e-Power are so common on Trinidad roads. Ask a customs broker for the current bands before choosing.
Popular choices
- Toyota Aqua, Yaris and Nissan Note e-Power: low tax band, low fuel use.
- Honda Vezel and Toyota C-HR: small SUVs.
- Toyota Harrier and RAV4: larger SUVs. Watch the engine-size tax band.
- Toyota Hilux and Probox: work vehicles.
- Toyota Roomy: a compact family car.
Browse: Toyota, Honda, Nissan. For a small van, see Daihatsu Atrai to Trinidad.
Shipping and clearance
Cars ship to the Port of Port of Spain. You'll need the Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, the customs declaration (C82) and a VIN and roadworthiness inspection on arrival before the Licensing Division registers the car.
