Jamaica's 5-year rule pushes buyers toward recent cars, and recent cars are expensive, except the Alto. It's one of the cheapest current-generation cars you can import, and almost all of our Altos are 2021 or newer, inside the limit.
Which Altos qualify
In 2026, cars built in 2021 or later fall within Jamaica's 5-year limit for private cars. We check the manufacture date before you buy, because the rule runs from the date of manufacture.
Why the Alto suits Jamaica
- Right-hand drive, like Jamaica.
- Very low fuel use, ideal for Kingston traffic and short trips.
- Low purchase price keeps the CIF value, and therefore the duty, down.
Things to know
- The Alto is a 660cc kei car: fine for town and short highway runs, slow on long climbs with four adults.
- Pick Hybrid X or X for alloy wheels and better safety kit; L is the basic grade.
Documents and clearance
You'll need an Import Licence before shipping, plus the Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, Commercial Invoice and Tax Compliance Certificate. Cars clear at Kingston Wharf; duty, GCT and the Standard Compliance Fee are charged on the CIF value.
