The Alto is Japan's cheapest new car and one of the cheapest used imports you can buy: a 660cc kei car that seats four and returns excellent fuel economy. Our stock is almost all recent (2021 on), with low mileage.
Generations and codes
- 8th generation, HA36S (2014–2021): light, simple, very economical. Grades L, S, X.
- 9th generation, HA37S (2021 on): new body, more safety kit.
- Alto Hybrid, HA97S (2021 on): the same car with Suzuki's mild-hybrid system for even lower consumption, in Hybrid S and Hybrid X grades.
All have the 660cc three-cylinder; nearly all are automatic (CVT).
Who it suits
- First cars, city commuting and ride-hailing on a tight budget.
- Islands with short distances and narrow roads.
It's not a highway cruiser, and with four adults on board it's best for town.
What to check
- Grade: L is basic; X and Hybrid X add alloy wheels, keyless entry and better safety support.
- 4WD: some Altos are 4WD (useful on hills); the listing grade or code says so.
- Rust underneath on older HA36S cars from snowy regions. The auction sheet flags it.
