The current Mazda3 (2019 onward; it replaced the Axela name in Japan) is one of the best-looking and best-built cars in its class, with a near-premium interior.
Body styles
- Fastback: the hatchback - the more common one.
- Sedan: more rear headroom and a bigger boot.
Engines (the code in the grade name)
- 15S / 15C: 1.5 petrol - cheapest to buy and tax.
- 20S: 2.0 petrol - the all-rounder.
- XD: 1.8 diesel - strong and economical on long drives.
- X: 2.0 Skyactiv-X, Mazda's high-tech petrol with mild hybrid.
"Proactive", "L Package" and "Burgundy/Black Tone" names are equipment levels. AWD is available on most engines.
What to check
- Engine code vs. local tax (1.5 is often the sweet spot).
- Diesel (XD): best for long trips; short-trip use can clog the particulate filter.
- Older Mazda3s were sold in Japan as the Axela - see our Mazda Axela guide.
