The Canter is one of the most common light trucks on Kenyan roads, and importing one direct from Japan is straightforward if you follow two rules: the 8-year age limit and the pre-export inspection.
The 8-year rule
Kenya accepts used vehicles up to 8 years old from the year of manufacture. Our Canters are almost all current-generation, near-new trucks, so age is not a problem, and a newer truck also usually means lower duty adjustments and fewer repairs.
Pre-export inspection
Every vehicle shipped to Kenya must pass a KEBS-approved roadworthiness inspection in Japan before it is loaded. We book the inspection, and the certificate travels with the shipping documents. Without it, the truck can't be cleared at Mombasa.
Why the Canter suits Kenya
- Right-hand drive, like Kenya.
- 3.0 turbo-diesel with a strong service network across East Africa.
- 2- and 3-ton flatbeds and dumps for matatu-route deliveries, construction and agriculture.
- The same truck can continue overland to Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan from Mombasa.
Shipping and duty
Trucks ship to the Port of Mombasa. Kenya charges import duty, excise duty, VAT, the Import Declaration Fee and the Railway Development Levy on the customs value. Commercial vehicles are taxed differently from cars, so check the current rates with a clearing agent.
