Trinidad & Tobago is stricter than most of its Caribbean neighbors: private buyers can only import used vehicles up to 4 years old, and every vehicle has to clear a VIN/roadworthiness inspection at the Port of Spain before it's released. That's exactly why sourcing straight from a Japanese exporter — who can filter auction listings by registration date before you ever commit — beats browsing a local lot that may be selling vehicles closer to the cutoff than advertised.
The 4-Year Rule
Private imports are capped at 4 years old from date of manufacture; dealers face additional restrictions beyond that. We only source vehicles that clear this age check before shipping, so you're not left with one that fails inspection on arrival.
Inspection and Documents
- Bill of Lading
- Commercial Invoice
- VIN/Roadworthiness Inspection Report
- Customs Declaration (Form C82)
Every vehicle is checked against the roadworthiness requirement before it leaves Japan.
Duty
Motor Vehicle Tax is charged based on engine size and vehicle age — newer, smaller-engine vehicles generally land at a lower total cost.
Right-Hand Drive
Trinidad & Tobago drives on the left, so a right-hand-drive Japanese import needs no steering conversion.
