The SW20 MR2 (1989–1999) is Toyota's mid-engined sports car, nicknamed the "baby Ferrari". Japanese-market cars were offered with the turbocharged 3S-GTE in all years, including the later, more powerful revisions.
Versions
- GT and GT-S: 2.0 turbo (3S-GTE), the ones most buyers want.
- G and G-Limited: 2.0 non-turbo (3S-GE), cheaper and simpler.
- Revisions (Rev 1–5): suspension, brakes and power improved over the years; later cars (Rev 3 on) are generally preferred.
- T-bar roof or fixed roof.
What to check
- Rust: rear arches, sills and the area around the engine bay.
- Gearbox: synchro wear, especially 2nd gear.
- Turbo and cooling: the engine sits behind you, so check for overheating and coolant leaks.
- T-bar seals for leaks.
The 25-year rule
Every SW20 is now 25+ years old, so it qualifies for the USA and Australia. See JDM to the USA.
