The Hilux Surf is the Japanese-market 4Runner, sold until 2009. Japanese Surfs often come with engines and trims the 4Runner never had abroad, especially the turbo-diesel.
Generations
- N130 (1989–1995): boxy classic.
- N185 (1995–2002): the most popular. 3.4 V6 petrol (5VZ) or 3.0 turbo-diesel (1KZ-TE).
- N215 (2002–2009): 2.7 four-cylinder or 4.0 V6 petrol; diesel early on.
Grades like SSR-X, SSR-G and SSR-V; many have 4WD with a rear diff lock.
What to check
- Frame and underbody rust: the most important item on any older Surf. Ask for underside photos.
- 1KZ diesel: head gasket and cooling history.
- Modifications: lifts and big tyres are common.

N130 and earlier N185 Surfs are 25+ years old and can go to the USA under the 25-year rule (see our JDM to USA guide) and to Australia.
