The 86 is Toyota's affordable rear-wheel-drive sports coupé, built with Subaru (it's the twin of the Subaru BRZ). Japan has a huge supply, and many are well kept enthusiast cars.
ZN6 86 (2012–2021)
2.0 flat-four (FA20), about 200 hp, 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Grades G, GT and GT Limited, plus GR and special editions. The 2016 facelift added a little power and updated looks.
ZN8 GR86 (2021 on)
2.4 flat-four (FA24), much more torque in the midrange, stiffer chassis, better interior. Grades RC (stripped, for motorsport), SZ and RZ. This is the one to buy if budget allows.
Manual or automatic
Most enthusiasts want the 6-speed manual, and it holds value best. The automatic is a good daily driver and cheaper.
What to check
- Modifications and track use: many are modified. Stock or lightly modified cars are the safer buy.
- Recalls and service history: ask whether all recall work was done.
- Clutch, tyres and alignment on hard-driven cars.
Who can import one
RHD 86s fit the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia (newer cars need compliance; see our Australia guide) and the Caribbean. GR86s (2021 on) also pass 4–5-year limits. The table below is live.
