The second-generation Smart ForFour (453, 2015–2020) is a 4-door, 4-seat city car built alongside the Renault Twingo, with the engine at the back and a tiny turning circle. Japanese-market cars are right-hand drive and automatic.
Engines and gearbox
- 1.0 (non-turbo) and 0.9 turbo three-cylinders.
- Twinamic is a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic, much smoother than the older Smart automated manual.
- Brabus: the 0.9 turbo with more power, sports suspension and trim.
Grades run Passion, Prime (leather, more equipment) and Brabus Sports.
Why it's interesting
- Turns in a very small circle, ideal for tight streets and parking.
- Four doors, unlike the 2-seat ForTwo.
- Low purchase price for a European car.
What to check
- Engine access: the engine sits under the boot floor. Ask about service history and coolant leaks.
- Twinamic behaviour at low speed: it should be smooth with no judder.
- Parts: Renault Twingo parts overlap, which helps in markets with Renault dealers.
Who can import one
ForFours suit no-age-limit markets: the Bahamas, Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. Being 2015–2020 cars, most are too old for 4–5 year limits. The table below shows the live picture.
