The Lexus IS is Lexus's compact rear-wheel-drive sports sedan - a reliable, well-equipped rival to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class at a lower used price.
Which IS is which
- Second generation (2005–2013): IS250 (2.5 V6) and IS350 (3.5 V6), plus the IS F with a 5.0 V8.
- Third generation (2013 onward): IS300h (2.5 hybrid - the most common and most economical), IS250 (early cars), IS200t / IS300 (2.0 turbo), and IS350 (3.5 V6). Facelifted in 2016 and again in 2020.
- F Sport grades add sportier seats, suspension and styling. "Version L" grades focus on comfort and leather.
What to check
- Engine size vs. tax: the hybrid and 2.0 turbo usually suit countries that tax by engine size; the 3.5 V6 costs more to import in many places.
- Hybrid battery: Lexus hybrids are very durable, but ask for the hybrid system check on older, high-km cars.
- AWD: some Japanese cars are AWD - fine for snow, slightly thirstier.
