In Mauritius, "reconditioned" cars are recent Japanese imports, and they're the main alternative to buying new. The rules are strict, so the car must be recent and the paperwork must start before shipping.
The 4-year rule
Used passenger cars must be under 4 years old (some vehicle categories differ). In 2026 that means cars built in 2022 or later. Our Mauritius list below only shows cars that qualify.
Get the NTA permit first
You need an import permit from the National Transport Authority before the car is shipped. Apply with the car's details (chassis number, year, engine) and we'll supply what the NTA needs. Shipping before the permit is approved can leave the car stuck at Port Louis.
Duty and VAT
Customs duty and VAT are charged on the CIF value, and duty depends on engine capacity. Hybrids and small engines are the most popular for that reason.
Popular choices
- Toyota Aqua and Yaris (hybrid): low duty band, low fuel use.
- Toyota Raize, Yaris Cross and Honda Vezel: small SUVs.
- Toyota Corolla and Corolla Cross: family cars.
- Suzuki Swift: a small, fun runabout.
Browse: Toyota, Honda, Suzuki.
