The Isuzu Forward is Japan's best-known medium-duty truck. Outside Japan it is sold as the Isuzu F-Series (FRR, FSR, FTR, FVR and similar codes), so parts and mechanics are easy to find in East Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia.
The spec
- Diesel engines: a 5.2-litre four-cylinder on lighter versions and a 7.8-litre six-cylinder on heavier ones.
- Load class: roughly 4 to 8 tonnes payload depending on wheelbase and body.
- Cab: standard or wide cab; "Wide" in a listing means the wider cab and body.
- Drive: almost all are 4x2 (2WD); 4WD and 6x2 versions exist but are rare.
What to check on any Japanese truck
- Body type: flatbed (hira), box/van, aluminium wing, refrigerated, dump, tipper or crane. The body is often worth as much as the chassis.
- Mileage and hours: long-haul trucks cover big distances. Look at the auction sheet and service records; low-km nearly new trucks cost more but skip years of wear.
- Emissions kit: newer trucks use a diesel particulate filter (DPD/DPF) and many need AdBlue (urea). Make sure your market can supply and service them.
- Payload and licence: check the rated load in the listing against your local truck licence and axle-load rules.
- Steering side: Japanese trucks are right-hand drive. Some left-hand-drive countries restrict RHD trucks - check before buying.
Who buys it
Transport companies, hardware and produce distributors, and anyone moving goods between towns. The Forward is popular because it is simple, strong and well supported.
The live table below counts how many of these trucks each country's age rule accepts. Truck freight depends on the body length and height, so we quote shipping per truck instead of showing an estimate - send us the stock number.
